Business management is the study of how to generate profit. You will learn how to create and refine products and services that are attractive to consumers and other businesses. There are a number of specialities within business – including accountancy, finance, marketing and human resources management.

To study a degree in business management you need to meet certain requirements which vary between universities. At the University of Sheffield, you can study business management with three A Levels with good grades. As an international student, you’re also able to meet the entry requirements with the International Foundation Year in Business, Social Sciences and Humanities, which will give you the necessary requirements and prepare you to study in the UK.

There are a variety of careers with a range of salaries you can pursue with a business management degree. You could follow a career as a stockbroker where you could eventually be earning in excess of £100,000 or you could earn up to £40,000 as a business advisor and work to become an economic development adviser where you can earn significantly more.

A business management degree typically takes three years, but at some universities, it can take four.

Entry level requirements and what subjects you need generally depend on the university you are applying to, but for business management universities typically do not have specific subject requirements. However, there are a number of subjects that can prove beneficial if you want to study a business management degree. Subjects such as Business Studies, Economics and Maths are good subjects to help you on a business management degree.

Maths is typically not required to study a business management degree at university. However, it can help you with certain business areas such as accounting and finance.

Business management and business administration are both really good degrees for those wanting to pursue a career in business. Neither is better than the other but one could be more beneficial to you depending on what career you want to pursue. Business management is tailored for those who want to manage staff or operations of a business, while business administration allows you to have broad options and then specialise in a specific area.

I like the teaching style here. We have a large population in China, so in each room, even in university, we have lots of people, so the teacher cannot take responsibility of each of you. You have to study by yourself, but here the teacher tells you have to work in a group, so this is what's important.
